we departed on friday afternoon. i had a headache in trying to figure out ways to pack my shelter which is 1.8m tall and 1.1m wide leaf into a 40 seater bus, al
ong with my other course mates' shelter. i did in the end, phew, luckily our lecturer was there to help as the bus driver wasn't too happy with us stuffing our shelter into his bus... :p. the journey took approximately 2 hours i guess, but i slept during mo
st of the journey as the night before we were all busy preparing the shelter. when we arrive i wasn't totally impressed by the beach, technically it's not really a beach. heh. it's a teluk, and the seawater is brownish, plus the place that we were suppose to stay w
as a really really small resort run by a family. i hope you get what i mean, no lobby, just some simple hall, a place to eat, and there's just 5 chalets. we students were placed in a hall, covered by a canvas, and that was where we were suppose to sleep. i've already planned not to sleep in that condition anyway.
moving on, after a simple lunch we started working on our shelter. digging the foundation was the easy start. then the unexpected arrived. the force of the wind was
unexpectedly strong. i mean, you have to be there to feel for yourself. i felt vulnerable and i feared for my weak little shelter made of pvc pipes and bottles. when we buikt the shelter we were told that the wind would be just a breeze, but instead it was like some storm, i
guess partly it was because of the moonsoon season. the weather wasn't really kind to us either, it rained and shinned in a matter of hours, alternating in between. ah, now i know being an architecture student also means spending hours under rough weather conditions.
back to the shelter, i almost gave up on it. initially the plan was to wait for the strong winds to lie low so we could assume putting up the shelter. but t
hat didin't work as after 2 hours the condition of the weather didn't look as if it would be for the better. so we improvised. we took out the part that would make the shelter turn 360 degree to lower the whole structure, partly because if we don't, the shelter will be too tall to stand the beatings of the strong wind, and the biggest problem was the leaves might snap into 2. so end up we buried the main structure 0.8m underneath the sand, put up the 3 leaves (initially the height of the leaves can be adjusted, but since we've had no choice to burry it in order to save the
structure), and later we added strings and tied the leaves into a permanent position so it wouldn't break, fly,
and sway. the whole process took more than 3 hours in total, and by the time the structure was up and ready my first thought was to ask the lecturer to star
t accessing it. but they didn't want to do so as it was tea time. end up the assessment was postpone to the next day. the whole night i was worried if my shelter would break into pieces. but it didn't!!! it survived!!!! do you know how proud i am of my shelter? i repeat, it survived the cold and harsh night by the beach!!
My project!! nice?

Night view
the climax of the trip was actually during the night wh
en all of us lay down by the beach and look at the stars. OMFG, the stars are so so so so clear and bright and pretty and breathtaking and it took my breath away when i saw it. i spent hours staring at it, thinking how i don't have the chance to view it anymore when i leave the place. a friend of mine even spotted blue sand! wanna know how to find it? usually d
uring the night the sea levels will be lower, so go far to the end and shove the sand with your slipper and you'll see spots of blue lights! apparently it's some microorganism that's giving out the lights. and the second thing was the impossibly cold wind( i use wind instead of breeze cos it was strong and cold! ) and i was stupid enough to leave my sweater in my dorm!
anyways, here i enclose some awesome pictures that was taken during the golden and blue hour, and all the shelters that we made painstakingly. enjoy.
