Super Duper Simple Apple Flan
i stumble upon a really simple recipe for apple flan while blog hopping last week. the ingredients
looks so much more simpler than the macarons one, and thinking that there was no butter involved ( i always forget to take the butter out of the fridge early enough to melt it, so most of the time i give up baking because i can't bake something there and then! the wait is just too unbearable for me) , but this recipe is just too irresistible to pass.
here's a look at the ingredients for the apple flan. truth to be told, i've never tasted apple flan before, and the only time i was expose to this was from the cartoon 'courage the cowardly dog', where the apple flan was suppose to be evil and it's main intention was to conquer the world....weird huh?
anyways, my mum has never supported me in using any untouched/unexperimented recipes because she says there's always, always one ingredient missing somewhere that will make the whole thing inedible. stubborn me, i actually bake this when she was at her shop :)
here's how it looks like after i mix the milk, eggs, sugar and flour. i used icing sugar instead because we ran out of the normal fine sugar and i'm using a fork to mix the mixture together so the sugar must be fine enough to dissolve . sometimes i surprise myself with baking because everything goes for me. if my mum was guiding me this would be unacceptable. baking should be fun and you should follow your heart too, right?
i did scatter a bit of flour at the baking tin so that the apple flan wouldn't stick to it, thinking that it would substitute the butter that my mother would usually use. boy i thought it won't be a big deal at first because i was using a non stick pan. i was wrong. so wrong.
here's me with the obligatory i -actually-bake-this -apple -flan picture. gosh look at the eye bags, i seriously need some sleep :p
ta-dah! here's the end result. not bad for a first time try huh? :)
apple flan innards, sorry for the quality of the pictures, my camera is so ancient i just need to get a new one someday...
i'm not sure how apple flan is suppose to taste like, but this one has a soft and chewy sort of texture. it tasted a little bit like pancakes, but with hidden soft and yummy apple slices inside. the lady at the opposite shop say it tasted nice though :)
and here's to why butter is a must in baking.
major apple-flan-sticked-to-my-baking-tin situation. this tin is still sitting at the corner of the kitchen, soaked in a pool of water. i hope all the residue will come off tomorrow. *fingers crossed*
ah well, the apple flan would have been great if i would have used butter. would i add anything else to improve the recipe? nope, just don't leave out the butter before you pour anything to the baking tin.
bon appetit!
:)
